PAT Testing PD

How to best use PAT testing.

  • When testing if kids need a lower test you need to go down by 2 or 3 tests or go up by 2 tests.
  • Using PAT along with the PACT tool is good evidence to back up an OTJ.
  • Can look at the scale based on gender and ethnicity.
  • 2 years worth of difficulty in one test.
Use ARB's to help for teaching.
Kids are moving for the levels because they can read but they haven't got the comprehension strategies to do this.

RPI Day 9

WOW the last RPI!

Today's focus was on sharing and connecting.

I need to make sure that I plan for sharing time more often. I need to build this into my timetable so we are doing it more regularly. My goal is that my class can do this as a follow up task once a week when they are not working with the teacher.

I also want to comment on blogs and give feedback. I would like to create a comment space where my students reply to these comments and act on the feedback too.

I am going to print off this slide to help when I am leaving feedback.

We find it hard to get whānau engagement on our blogs but I think the idea of setting a task for our tamariki to do at home with their whānau would be a great way to get them involved and if students blog about this activity whānau could be more likely to want to see what they have said on their blogs.

I have really enjoyed all the skill builders we have done on RPI. Its been great to focus on one skill and dive into it and get lots of resources and ideas to teach these different reading strategies. I especially liked summarising as this is something I always found a bit harder to do with my learners, so getting more ideas and resources was perfect for my class!

Day 8- Creating

Today we have been focusing on create and why this is so important.

This has been great for me as this has been a huge discussion at my school around how we can hook students into what they are learning about and the activities and possible create tasks we were shown today will definitely help.

A task we had to do today was create a short 1 minute film about a book we would recommend to someone. This is a task I know my students will love doing as they have been loving filming and acting and being creative. This is also something that will be easy to implement with my class as we already have a place to film and have ipads available for this. I also like that this is something they can share on their blogs as I find it hard to find things to add to their blogs that link to reading and what they are learning in reading.

Another activity that we did today was recording ourselves read a poem and then used AI to come up with a photo that we thought matched it. I often read to my class and get them to draw what they think a character looks like or the setting but I liked that this took it to the next level.

Looking at the create examples will be super helpful when I am planning for my groups and also for shared reading. There were lots of suggestions for different sites that can be used for our create tasks too  - I have never used google earth or Minecraft in reading so I am keen to give this a go!

It was great to be given so many examples and resources that are easy to use and to plan for too.

I am looking forward to planning some create tasks and seeing what my class comes up with and shares on their blogs!

RPI Day 7 - Thinking

Today has been great. We had lots of time to practise and use what we were learning about and putting it into our planning.

The graphic organisers for different tasks will be/have been super helpful. I think they will be very useable for my year 3/4 class whether we do it online or hard copy.

I have linked this to my shared reading plan for this week. I think my class will really enjoy having a go at this.

This session has helped me to think deeper about the activities that I can do with my class and how to extend their thinking and also give them task that they can do when they aren't with a teacher.

The overview of thinking opportunities slide will be really helpful to check what thinking levels are for different activities.

When we were discussing analysing I liked the part about zooming in and zooming out. I think I find it easier and more often do the zooming in so I will focus on zooming out when I plan my lessons.

I also find the critical literacy questions a great resource to help when planning my lessons because they are catergorised it helps me make sure I don't always focus on one aspect and not the others.

Day 5 - Homework

I really liked Literacy Planet that we were shown during our last session.

I have been looking for something like this for my class for a while. This has been added to my reading task board for students to do during our reading time. My class are loving it and really engaged. They show each other the progress they have made and are really excited to use it.

I have always tried to link my reading and writing times together so my class can make the connection between them. We do the code spelling programme and I have found over the last 3 weeks that this is a great way to transition from reading into writing.

I didn't get a chance to try the great beginnings lesson but I did use aspects of this into our poetry writing that we have been doing. I was really impressed with what my students did and one of my target writers was able to write his ideas for his poem on his own and he loved it!

Day 6 - all things Vocab!

I have been really excited for this session because I love teaching students about vocabulary.

I thought the word knowledge builder would be a great resource to use with my class to check in. This is something I do at the beginning of lessons but I don't have it recorded anywhere and I don't always check in at the end to see if students have a better understanding. I think it would be really great to see how this is added to over the term.  I also really like the traffic light idea for some of my other reading groups this would be a more achievable way for them to use it.

Discussing word consciousness really made me think about the students in my class that regularly show me that they have an awareness and interest for words and also those that don't and what I could do to help my students that don't. I am going to make that during guided sessions/shared reading that I take the time to stop and focus on different words and set challenges for my  students.

My favourite part of todays session was the buddy activities that we got to do. I liked the word associations and which would you activity because this something my class would love to do. It would start a lot of great discussions between my students. I have planned one for one of my reading groups to do next term and I am really excited to see how this goes. I also think I will be able to use this with the shared reading texts we use as well. I liked that with the which would you activity it asked to say why you chose it and this is great because it takes it the next step and makes you really think about your choice.

Overall it was a great session on vocab! I can't wait to use these activities in my class. I also want to make it very explicit in my timetable about what is happening during my literacy time. Rather than just writing reading and writing so I can see how much time I am given to different aspects of my literacy programme.
